Shanagarry Design Centre

Shan Design373
Acrylic on acrylic paper. 11.5”x 8”.
I’m going to use this image for postcards and greeting cards which will be on sale in my studio “Downstairs in Shanagarry Design”. Some people are finding it hard to find the studios, so here’s how you find us; Go right through the shop and head for the conservatory, right opposite the coffee machine there is a flight of stairs going down, take these stairs and below you will find a world of art and design, with the beautiful fragrances of Angels Touch body lotions etc, the amazing ceramic artwork of Stable Door Pottery, the delighted laughing of small children in art and craft classes with Ann O’ Riordan of Eco Paisti and the incredible painting and prints of artists Belinda Northcote and Phil Davis.
Having wandered round the studios, all of which are open to visitors you can head back upstairs to enjoy a sumptuous lunch or maybe just a coffee and cake, and maybe purchase a little something from the huge stock in the Kilkenny shop.
There is probably nowhere, in Ireland, quite like the Shanagarry Design Centre, you can shop, lunch, take a class in painting or ceramics, bring the little ones for a class with Ann, or simply chill out with a coffee in the conservatory, taking in the magnificent views of Ballycotton Bay. A must visit!

Sketch

Gull Sketch358
Acrylic on cartridge paper. Trying to figure out a new painting, think this would have worked better in portrait rather than landscape and probably should have more space something at bottom so that gulls have somewhere to go, like a rock or boat , any opinions?

Bullfinches reworked

Bullfinch349-001
Bullfinches. Coloured Pencil. Reworked.
bullfinch-1 (2)
Bullfinches. Coloured Pencil. Original version.

I painted this originally in 2007 and posted it on here in Jan 2011, (bottom image) but I was never really happy with it , my patience ran out building up the colour and I had an exhibition coming up so I framed it and exhibited . It didn’t sell and I wasn’t really surprised and it’s been hanging in my studio ever since. Every time I looked at it I thought “must take that down and rework it”, so finally I have. What do you think, old or new? I know what I think!

Jess

Jess343
"Jess" Acrylic on paper. 10"x8"

Another of my pet portraits, this is the youngest of my cats, only about 2 years old now, which was dumped outside my studio when she was tiny…I had to take her home didn’t I?
We have a Belfast sink in which she likes to take a drink from the tap and then sit and play with the water.

Bulldog336

Pet Portraits

Slut cat333-001
Arylic on board. 8” x10 “
This is the second of my cats. He’s actually a brother to the other one I posted before, we call him “The Slut”. Not for the obvious reasons I hasten to add, he has had the operation, no its just that he is so friendly he will give himself up to anybody prepared to fuss him and will stretch himself across their lap, on his back, as if to say “take me, I’m yours”!
I think the idea of pet portraits is getting stronger in my head.

This is the reference photo I used, thinking about doing pet portraits, what do you think?

Ballycotton by moonlight

IMG_1225-001
BALLYCOTTON by MOONLIGHT
Acrylic on canvas. 20”x28”
This is a subject I have intended to paint for a long time, as the church is lit up at night it makes a great subject that I was keen to try to capture. A couple of weeks ago there was an amazing full moon which I was delighted to see was directly over the church as I drove into the village. Thankfully I had my camera with me and after a lot of trial and error, not being a great photographer, I finally got a shot I could work with. This is the resulting painting.

Padlocks

locks315 (2)
“Acrylic on watercolour paper. 10” x 7””
I painted this for a challenge called “Heavy Metal” on a website called Paint My Photo, and you have to use a reference photo from a photograph posted on the site. I found it a real test to make the metal look like metal.

New Painting

west end ballyc300-001 (2)
“West End , Ballycotton Village”
Just finished this painting from a picture I took several years ago. Sadly since I started the painting the restaurant has closed and the house at the end badly damaged by fire, but thankfully nobody injured. I agonised over whether to finish the painting but when all said and done it is showing a piece of Ballycotton history.
Framed prints of this painting are available from the prints page on this blog or my website www.theartofphildavis.com or call in to me in my studio Downstairs in Shanagarry, Shanagarry Design Centre, Shanagarry Co Cork.

I was fortunate to sell this painting yesterday. It was painted from photographs I took in Buenos Aires in 2010. I dont know if the guy was homeless or a dog minder but he was in the same park every morning with about 9 dogs including a Doberman and a Rotweiler, so I took my pics from the other side of the fence.

Roches Point

IMG_1187-001

OIL on CANVAS. 36"X 12" . €350.00

I have been working on this painting on and off for a couple of years, thinking that it was finished on at least two occasions, but then deciding otherwise and reworking it, in the end , completely. I am finally, reasonably happy with it, but not entirely, so I hope somebody buys it quickly so I’m not tempted to take a brush to it again.
If you are interested in buying any of my paintings you can contact me @ phildavis@iol.ie or buy online on my new works page on this blog theartofphildavis.blogspot.ie or from my website at www.theartofphildavis.com

Sold Today

IMG_4449-002

I’m delighted to say that this painting has gone to a good home today. It doesn’t matter how many paintings I have sold over the years I still get the same thrill that someone will actually give me money for something I have painted.

Affordable Originals

Bally1268 Bally2269 Bally3270

For a long time now I have been looking for a way to produce original paintings at an affordable price, especially with the tourist season coming up. I think that possibly there is a glut of prints out there at the moment as everyone seems to be discounting them.

This is my effort at affordable original art, these are NOT prints, they are hand painted acrylics, image size 8”x6”, signed , framed and ready to hang, all for €45.00.

First Painting of 2014

Lifeboat216

Acrylic on mountboard. 10”x8”

I painted this for a local fund raising committee in Ballycotton who are trying hard to raise funds to bring back home a very famous Ballycotton Lifeboat, “The Mary Stanford”, which sadly, is badly in need of repairs and a good home. There is a fund raiser in the Garryvoe Hotel on Sunday night so if you are in the area please call in.
