"Punts in Ballycotton"

I took this picture a long time ago, the punt in the back being that used by the lifeboat to ferry to the crew to and fro. Initially tried to use ink on the canvas surface but this did not work, the ink bleeding too much, so was forced to try acrylic over it which seems to have worked.

I have tried to keep it loose but have as usual got tied up in detail, but I think it has worked out alright.

Peek a Boo

Using up oil paint left over from classes , it made a nice change from the ink pigment I have been using lately. I had a small painting on a canvas board that I had discarded, unfinished, so decided to use the board.

I have painted so many derelict cottages lately I thought a derelict car would be a nice change, still the same theme though.

Another of my pet portraits, this is the youngest of my cats, only about 2 years old now, which was dumped outside my studio when she was tiny…I had to take her home didn’t I?
We have a Belfast sink in which she likes to take a drink from the tap and then sit and play with the water.

Missy

Another pet portrait, painted this in 2012, Missy belongs to a friend of mine, Orla of Stable Door Pottery and I  took the photo, thought she made a great subject.

Ballycotton by moonlight

BALLYCOTTON by MOONLIGHT

This is a subject I have intended to paint for a long time, as the church is lit up at night it makes a great subject that I was keen to try to capture. A couple of weeks ago there was an amazing full moon which I was delighted to see was directly over the church as I drove into the village. Thankfully I had my camera with me and after a lot of trial and error, not being a great photographer, I finally got a shot I could work with. This is the resulting painting.

New Painting

Just finished this painting from a picture I took several years ago. Sadly since I started the painting the restaurant has closed and the house at the end badly damaged by fire, but thankfully nobody injured. I agonised over whether to finish the painting but when all said and done it is showing a piece of Ballycotton history.

I was fortunate to sell this painting yesterday. It was painted from photographs I took in Buenos Aires in 2010. I dont know if the guy was homeless or a dog minder but he was in the same park every morning with about 9 dogs including a Doberman and a Rotweiler, so I took my pics from the other side of the fence.

I have been working on this painting on and off for a couple of years, thinking that it was finished on at least two occasions, but then deciding otherwise and reworking it, in the end , completely. I am finally, reasonably happy with it, but not entirely, so I hope somebody buys it quickly so I’m not tempted to take a brush to it again.

Bank Holiday Weekend

It’s a Bank Holiday Week End here in Ireland and in Ballycotton , every year, they have a fund raiser  for the RNLI, which is very well supported, especially as we have a lifeboat in the village, well in the harbour actually.

If you are anywhere near Ballycotton for the weekend call down, there is loads for the kids to do and adults too.

New Picture

Just finished this one, painted on a small canvas board. Going to do a few small ones like this , I already have frames for them. Seem to be on a roll at the moment so will paint while it lasts.

Work in Progress(again)

I have been working on this on and off for the last week or so, it’s coming along, but I think its getting a bit fussy so I think I may change a few things.There are a few more people to go in but don’t want to fill it up too much, mind you ,it is a city scene, so I suppose there has to be a few people!
Spent a great day on Sunday last painting  “Plein Air” in the grounds of Ballymaloe Country House  and restaurant with a brilliant group of artists from South West Pleineire. I am ashamed to say that after 25 or so years painting this was my first serious attempt to paint outside, and it was brilliant, even though I produced two paintings that are total rubbish, I had a great time. Everyone in the group was friendly and supportive, and I can’t wait to go again.

The other side

Haven’t got round to posting for the last few days, and haven’t done a whole lot of painting either, time just seems to be slipping away. Will have to get a move on as an exhibition coming up at the end of April.

Thought I’d show a different side to my art today, every now and then I turn away from the representational and just throw paint.I love to see what happens when I just let the paint run and I love using primary colours, the more vivid the better. Never quite sure how to put a title on them though.

Foxy Lady

I was inspired by another artist Karen on UKCPS to try this one after seeing her picture of a vixen on her blog http://wildaboutart.blogspot.com/ . Its coloured pencil on black Canford paper and it's one of the few paintings I have finished using CP. I have to say that while I love the overall effect it can become quite tedious building up the colour and I am always comparing the time taken to what I could achieve with paint , however I am reasonably happy with this although I have changed it around the mouth after receiving some very helpful critiques on UKCPS, I must re scan it and show the improvements.

While I am writing this blog, I am watching through my window at the bird feeders I have in the trees opposite and it occured to me that maybe I should try to encourage more people to feed their garden birds, it does'nt cost a fortune and is a huge assistance to small birds during the cold winter months when it can be hard for them to find enough food, also it can give hours of free entertainment.
