Back to the birds and coloured pencil, I still have the intention of painting every bird common to Ireland, however I think my production needs a boost.

"Fishing Boats in Ballycotton "
Ink pigment on acrylic paper.
16"x12"

Whenever I am struggling for inspiration I turn to the harbour in Ballycotton. With all the different boats, most commercial fishing boats ,  others waiting for their weekend owners to take them out on a pleasure trip, I never fail to see a potential painting. For this painting I used my (at the moment) favourite medium, ink pigment, with a small amount of acrylic for some of the smaller details.

The colourful town of Cobh is a great inspiration to paint. Love this view from the pier.

The first painting of Cork City for a long time. Tried to keep it loose but was very hard not to get bogged down in detail.

Derelict farmyard

Ink pigment and acrylic paint on acrylic paper.
11.5" x 8"

Really on a roll with these ink pigments although I have used small amounts of acrylic paint on this one. Another derelict farmyard that I would love to own, but wouldn't have the energy to renovate. Looking for a name for the painting....any suggestions?

Ardoginna Castle

Ardoginna Castle574

“ Pen & Ink on acrylic paper.”
Had a week-end away recently in Ardmore, Co Waterford. Next to the house we stayed in was this amazing ruin of a castle. This is only a small part of it as there are numerous outbuildings and extensions, all unfortunately in a ruined state, …must have been an amazing place when it was complete.
Decided to try out the pen and inks again for this and I think it worked out alright.

Sketch

Gull Sketch358
Acrylic on cartridge paper. Trying to figure out a new painting, think this would have worked better in portrait rather than landscape and probably should have more space something at bottom so that gulls have somewhere to go, like a rock or boat , any opinions?

Jess

Jess343
"Jess" Acrylic on paper. 10"x8"

Another of my pet portraits, this is the youngest of my cats, only about 2 years old now, which was dumped outside my studio when she was tiny…I had to take her home didn’t I?
We have a Belfast sink in which she likes to take a drink from the tap and then sit and play with the water.

Pet Portraits

Slut cat333-001
Arylic on board. 8” x10 “
This is the second of my cats. He’s actually a brother to the other one I posted before, we call him “The Slut”. Not for the obvious reasons I hasten to add, he has had the operation, no its just that he is so friendly he will give himself up to anybody prepared to fuss him and will stretch himself across their lap, on his back, as if to say “take me, I’m yours”!
I think the idea of pet portraits is getting stronger in my head.

This is the reference photo I used, thinking about doing pet portraits, what do you think?

More horses

IMG_9944-001

Not sure if this is finished yet, it’s acrylic on paper and as you can see I have tried to use a watercolour technique on the background. I would be interested to hear opinions on this.

The cold weather has finally caught up with us in East Cork, although we have not had snow like they have in other parts of Ireland and England. I’m sitting in my studio with three heaters going, trying to find inspiration to paint. I really should try to finish some of the 14/15 pictures I have started and am yet to complete.

More runners

IMG_6069-1
Just finished this, acrylic  and black fineliner on acrylic paper, quite please with the overall effect but made a bit of a mess of the right hand front runners face. The background was painted using a matt glazing medium, but I don’t think I am getting it right. I keep practising glazes but I never seem to achieve quite what I want.
I have started a version of this one in coloured pencil ,will post it when finished.
Just a reminder that if you are in the Midleton area between 5th and 10th September, call into INA McCARTHY for FLOWERS in the Main St, where 20 something of my art class members are exhibiting.
