Time to stare

“ Brid on the rocks” Oil on canvas. 30”x40”
Hi all, hope today finds you all well, This is a painting of me on the rocks, at least that’s what I call it.I hate photos of myself so the only compromise was for me to look out to sea.Still I love this because it’s got real depth. It nearly sold a couple of times, but secretly I’d be happy if it never sold!
One of Phil’s  favourite songs when he’s a bit down is  “Always look on the bright side of life” by Monty Python, so if you need cheering up have a listen.

The last paddle

IMG_4212-2
Not sure if I have posted this before, not a very good photo I’m afraid, but it brings back memories of warmer days. I was going through my sketch books looking for something to inspire me when I found this little watercolour from a couple of years ago, maybe even longer. I think I will use it for a bigger painting , maybe in watercolour.
I am starting a new beginner course this morning, and I am a bit nervous. I haven’t run a beginner’s class in a couple of years. Been content to work away with improvers and advanced students.
Although we have had a very mild winter this year, the last two mornings have been cold and wet and windy, the light hasn’t seemed to break through at any stage, and it’s kind of depressing, but I suppose I shouldn’t complain, at least we have had no snow!

Catching the Tide

_N0N0003-1

“Catching the tide” Pen and watercolour.

Its impossible to live so close to the sea in a fishing village without painting the sea and the boats that rely on it . A couple of years ago I did a series of some of the local boats and thought it might make an interesting post

“Tying up” Pen and Watercolour

Most of the boats fishing from the village are small day boats that leave early morning and return at night, only rarely staying out overnight.

“Waiting for the Tide” Pen and watercolour

“Trev’s big catch” Pen and watercolour

This last painting is of my son-in-law and his boat, and I gave him the original which was then entitled “Trevs other big catch” referring to the fact that my daughter was his first big catch. I hope he saw the humour.

The last paddle

IMG_4211-2

The sun is shining today and we are having a heatwave… 10c! This reminded me that Ireland is not always cold and wet, so I decided to post something that reminded me of summer.

I have several photos of my grandson, niece and a friend of theirs, playing on the beach and used them as a reference for this sketch, think it might actually make a painting.

Having a clear out of my studio and found 14 unfinished paintings, so one of my New Year resolutions is to try and finish them. Amongst the debris found this one which is finished.

Not the best photo , but it gives you the idea. I painted this last year on an old piece of board, which I first painted with black gesso and then used oils on top.
