The ref photo for this painting was taken from the back of my house. I was taken by the dark sky against the yellow of the rape field. Finished it on last Saturday evening and on Sunday morning knocked it off the easel and ended up with two large tears in the canvas. Tried to patch it up with tape on the back and painting over the rips but didn’t really work ,so started it again on another canvas. Will post that when done,…..providing it stays in one piece.
Too bad you ripped it; I love the contrast of light and dark and the sky is awesome.

This is great Phil. It looks big and bold with a vast impressive sky. I can't imagine how you felt when you ripped the canvas.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the other version.

So sorry to hear about the ripped painting - I would have been gnashing my teeth! Good for you for planning to redo it - it really is a stunning piece! nancy
ReplyDeleteHow annoying ... I've spoiled a pastel picture by using an old can of Fixative (splotches everywhere) so sympathise. I'm sure Version II will be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI love the contrast of the stormy sky and the bright yellow of the crop. So sorry to hear of the accident that befell the canvas.
ReplyDeleteOh how frustrating! And I'm a bit envious of having that as the view from your house.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you probably know Van Gogh's painting Wheatfield with Crows? Of course it may be that I've been reading about it so am seeing it everywhere... but if it wasn't an influence on this it should have been!
I agree that dark sky and the contrast are striking - your painting looks so great, it must have been more than frustrating to damage it...
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody for the kind comments. I did know Van Goghs painting and maybe that was what made me take the
ReplyDeletephoto in the first place, then my wife showed me the Van Gogh and pointed out the similarity. I think I will put birds in the remake.
That's a shame about the tears but perhaps the new painting will come out even better.
ReplyDeleteOuch, sorry to hear of the accident and glad you are redoing it, Hopefully you will be able to recapture your fresh approach with the new one. If it doesn't work, don't stress there is always another painting to work on.
ReplyDeletewow that's a fabulous interpretation of the photo - love the brushwork.
ReplyDeleteGreat clouds
ReplyDeleteDang...hate that you tore this! Wonderful painting. I love went dark storm clouds come rolling in and the ground plane is still receiving light!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful contrast and color combination. Sorry for the accident. How frustrating must that be.
