Girl with a blue earring(work in progress)

IMG_0002-001

Still working on this. Decided to give her a blue earring and headband…what do you think? Still have to blend her cheek, don’t like the pale line between the two darker values. This happened when the paint was wet and I used my finger to blend the paint which only served to take the paint off.

  1. Hi Phil, So far she is lovely. Will pop back to see how you finish her. Thanks for sharing your art.

  2. I agree with you the pale spot makes her skin look oily otherwise she has a great nose and eyes that position is tricky to look natural your doing it well and she is coming together nicely.

  3. Well you asked for an opinion, so I will give it a heartfelt shot (sort of how I would examine it myself in my own painting.) I like the earring. Is it leaning a bit to the left? I wonder whether the viewer is now torn between the natural inclination to look at the eyes and the earring. Then again, folks adorn themselves with jewelry, so it is probably fine. I think the headband is fine too and a nice addition but (unless the scan/monitor is playing with the intensity of color as it often does), I think the blue on the band needs to be toned down a bit, especially since it is in shadow and also needs to be toned to show that it is tucking under the hair. Hope you don't mind all of the input - you asked for an opinion, so I assume you didn't want a whitewash - dangerous!

I look forward to how it progresses!

  4. Thanks for the comments gang. Dan, love the input and you are so right. I was worried about the intensity of the blue and also it was a silly mistake not to put the hairband in shadow, and yes, now I look again the earring is hanging to the left. Thanks so much for the critique, always welcome especially from an artist of your calibre.

  7. Hello Phil,
I keep leaving a reply but it keeps disappearing-so I will try again :-)
There is not much I can add to what others have already said. The hairband is too strong but strangely....I like it like that (although I would end up changing it I guess). The earring is to the left but I don't think that is a problem.
I think this is going to be a great portrait and I am looking forward to seeing the finished painting.
    Stew.
