Work in Progress 2

IMG_0531-001
Spent a very humid day in the studio working on this again, think it’s getting places though still not happy with the background, too bright?

The exhibition is getting ever closer but we seem to have everything under control, I start worrying as it gets closer that something major has been forgotten.
Met a lovely lady yesterday in the studio, artist Cora Murphy who works out of a studio in Cork City. Her work is really good and her website is well worth a look. www.cormurphy.com

Work in Progress

IMG_0524-001

Another racing scene,  as you can see,40”x30” canvas. Not sure if the background is too strong but will carry on until the jockeys colours are in, might get a better idea then.

The sun is still beating down, so the classes are very slack and visitors to the studio few and far between, all on the beach I suspect. Maybe I should be on the beach painting?

Nearly Finished

IMG_0519-001

It’s very hard to settle down and paint in the stunning weather we are having, but I have managed to do some and this one is now nearing completion, just a few nicks here and there I think. It’s a largish canvas, 40”x 30”, I like this size a lot, its not too big to be intimidating. I have started another canvas this size, again of a racing scene, I will post a work in progress.

I have been very busy in the last week getting the exhibition, “A Real Piece of Work” organised. With 40 odd artists involved it’s quite an undertaking, but everybody is giving what help they can, so it will all come right at the end!

If you are anywhere near the venue this exhibition is a MUST SEE!

Cobh Cathedral

IMG_0495-001
Another picture that I discarded and came back to. The town of Cobh (formally Queenstown) which hosted the ill fated Titanic before it tragically sank.
Oil on canvas with the paint applied with a palette knife. I took the reference photo a number of years ago from a boat.

Hot Hot Hot

The weather is amazing, summer is finally here and everybody is making for the beach. The studio is very quiet, so maybe I should head for the beach as well.

Brid on cliffs090-001

I have been trawling through my sketchbooks again and came across this sketch of my wife.

I have used similar sketches for a painting that I posted recently, but this is from a different angle…may make a painting.

A Real Piece of Work

You are going to get sick of hearing about this but I will be posting regularly to remind you all to come to an exhibition of paintings by artists in my classes.

Friday 9th August @ 7.30pm

Downstairs” in Shanagarry Design Centre,

Shanagarry, Co Cork.

This is a  not to miss exhibition!!!!

Penn Castle076

It wouldn’t be my blog without a picture so here is one I painted and sold recently, of Penn Castle, which was owned by the family of William Penn who invented Pennsylvania, (hope I spelt it right). This is next door to my studio, so it was inevitable that I would paint it sooner or later.

IMG_0472
The view from the Bayview Hotel, Ballycotton, where myself and 7 others of the Old Road Painters group had our Summer night out. What more could you wish for , a view like this and superb food and wine. It was wonderful to dine “en plein eire”.

IMG_0402-001
This is still a work in progress but at least she has a head! I started this yonks ago to try out oil pastels but I didn’t get on well with them, then I tried acrylics and then oil paint over it, making up the scene as I went along, which is very unusual for me.This is the cropped version, which is the one I prefer, below is the uncropped one. Which do you prefer?

Time to stare

IMG_0375-001
“ Brid on the rocks” Oil on canvas. 30”x40”
Hi all, hope today finds you all well, This is a painting of me on the rocks, at least that’s what I call it.I hate photos of myself so the only compromise was for me to look out to sea.Still I love this because it’s got real depth. It nearly sold a couple of times, but secretly I’d be happy if it never sold!
One of Phil’s  favourite songs when he’s a bit down is  “Always look on the bright side of life” by Monty Python, so if you need cheering up have a listen.

Work in progress

IMG_0344
Morning all, thanks to everyone for reading this blog and for bearing with me while I learn to do it properly.      This is the painting that my darling husband is currently working on. I think its great but the detail of the crowd and the horses ( the most difficult part) is still to be done.  We await the finished product.IMG_0354
Here are some of Phils students paintings outside the studio. they are really good. Everyone is welcome to come visit us, even inside the studio, just smile at the bear and all will be well, mostly!!!!!P9180577
Here is the beautiful Ballycotton Lighthouse Island, we consider ourselves very lucky to live in this wonderful place. Bob the Blogger.

Views from Phil’s Studio

IMG_0341
"He’s lucky to be able to paint from this beautiful place."

Hi all, we are sad today because it seems one of our heroes “Madiba” may soon  take his “terminal breath”. All morning we are singing, “Free Nelson Mandela”. He will surely go to heaven smiling and wearing one of his bright shirts. You’ll soon be “ Free Nelson Mandela” .

IMG_0329

My  husband is a boring old fart so I have decided to take over his blog.

I am going to show you his paintings, his studio and tell you things about our lives.

The purpose of all this is that, I want him to be a famous artist. It’s a recession folks, but we’ve still got to make a living!

I haven’t told him I am doing this…yet, so don’t squeal!

Wise Old Owl

Barn Owl045“Barn Owl” Coloured pencil on paper.

A painting of a, sadly, declining species in Ireland but thankfully still relatively common in my area. It takes a lot of work to build up the colours with pencil but is worth it in the end. I might go over the background with acrylic as I am not really happy with it, I tried blending with white spirits but it only partially worked.

Robin073

“Robin” Mixed Media

Painted this initially in 2007, with coloured pencil, but reworked it this year with acrylic in the background.
